Best Multi Effects Pedal Buyers Guide

Back in the day, a multi-FX pedal processor was marked as the jack of all trades and master of none but in present, this has been upgraded. The Multi-FX was designed for a one stop shop solution for guitarists so that they can find all the ingredients for an epic musical piece – all in one place.

Growing capabilities and innovations in the DSP sector has now been made possible – a top quality multi effects device can achieve this.

What is a multi effects processor?

Also known as a multi-fx device, multi-effects pedal gathers all the digital models of various vintage processors in one standalone package. This device allows players to use preset combinations of different effects – all in one go.

A multi-effects device has it all, ranging from distortion to chorus effects one can pick any and also use other sound manipulations simultaneously. Some high-end multi-effects device include looper functions so that you don’t have to invest especially for a looper device.

Multi-effects pedals are available in a variety of ranges, from 2 stomp boxes built into one package to more than 10 pedals built into one device, users get a wide range of stomp boxes to choose from.

So now we know what differs a multi-effects device from a typical pedalboard, let us move on and discuss some frequently asked questions.

Pros and Cons of a multi effects device

Affordable

You get a lot of effects in a multi-effects device under an affordable price range. Buying separate stomp boxes for applying different effects is not required. With a multi-effects device, you get an array of vintage and new effects all in one neat package.

While a multi-effects device offers some serious convinience, a stompbox only contains a few effects and there is only a small amount of difference in both options.

Variety of Options

It's okay if you are looking for a single effect that will aid your performance but what about the people who are experimenting on a daily basis? In a multi-effects device, you get more than what you ask for, really.

A lot of options allow users to mash-up different effects to create something that is impossible with a simple stomp box.

Space Saver

Think of around 20 pedals gathered on one device board, would it look nice? Absolutely not, a bunch of cables would be going here and there making your appearance on stage suffer.

A multi-effects pedal gathers all the effects in one neat package – only one patch cord connecting your guitar rather than a whole lot of cables going around.

Creating presets for your performance can be handy, rather than constantly changing pedals as you play your songs.

You can simply use the patch option for using different effects in split-seconds without any hassle of switching to different pedals.

Unreliability

Yes! Your multi-effects device can fail in the middle of your performance when you need to pump up the audience.

It's good to get a whole lot of effects but what if your device dies in the middle? Some poorly built multi-effects pedals can leave your side anytime.

Just be sure to pick one that customers recommend!

Digital cannot replace analog

Ask the professionals around you “can a digital sound replace the authenticity of analog sounds?” The answer would be no as one can’t match digital zeros with an analog system.

A multi-effects device revamps the effects from various stomp boxes in a digital format, and as we all know that re-creating anything falls short from the original.

We don’t say that digitally created effects will ruin your experience, but the old analog's may never shine that greatly.

Hard to tweak

Reaching a pedal to tweak some settings takes no time or experience but if you have just bought a new multi-effects device we can’t predict anything.

`multi-effects devices have a variety of effects built into one package that makes tweaking every single effect a little more diffuclt. We are not saying that it's impossible but the newbies will surely face a few difficulties.

After analyzing the pros and cons let us see which modular effects your multi-effects pedal should include!

What are Modulation effects?

Basically, a modulation sound copies the original signal and alters it then it blends the altered signal into the original signal for creating the desired sound.

Have you ever experienced volume frantically going up and down just after the note hit? That modulation is known as tremolo (or in some cases vibrato). This effect alters the volume signal at a preset interval within a preset range.

Speed and depth are the two controls that you get with tremolo. For changing the volume fluctuations one can use the speed knob while depth control allows a user to control the tremolo fluctuation from loud to soft.

Since the rock era, tremolo has been around to give guitarists an unusually different edge. If you are all about rock then make sure to check if your multi-effects device includes a tremolo or not.

Duplicating the original waveform of a guitar’s output and shifting one wave out of phase with another other is what this modulation effect does. Also known as phase shifters, they blend both waves together through an oscillating circuit which results in waves moving in and out making a “whooshing” effect.

The 1970s and 1980s were eras in which the phase shifters were used to rock the stage. So do you want to include that vintage sound in your performance?

Putting your thumb repeatedly on a tape recorder reel for outputting a dry signal alongside the original output is what the flanger pedal does so well. The Flanger effect has a depth setting that allows you to tweak the intensity of the flanger and a rate control that adjusts the cycles per assigned speed.

Basically, flanging outputs a thick or spacey feel to the tone. Such capabilities make flanger amongst the most important sound manipulation that we should all be looking for!

Ever experienced multiple voices sounding the same notes? That is actually what chorus effect does! This alters the duplicated signal in a more nuanced way for keeping up the original input.

Chorus effects feel like same signals passing through two different amps with a slight delay in between them. For thickening up the output of guitars, a chorus effect does a great job (click here to see our review of the best Chorus Pedals online).

So if one wants to bulk up the tone of their guitars – he/she should look for a chorus sound manipulation in their multi-effects pedal.

What are time-based effects and do you need them?

Time-based effects don’t interfere inside the waveforms but hold one back by allowing the other signal to pass first. One can control the delay in time and the amount of signal that is affected by a level control.

The distance between the record and playback heads on typical tape recorders matches the mechanism of delay. In theory, this effect mirrors the original signal and repeats it after the original sound has passed on.

One can use delay as an echo sound by repeating the delay over and over again. Users can set the time delay in between repetitions to create a unique sound.

One can title reverb as a more precise form of delay as it features natural echo effects of a variety of spaces. Various amps do include reverb effects but professional guitarists prefer to have a standalone reverb device to properly program the signals.

Reverb is a great tool to add a variety of spaces in your signals. So if you are looking to add a "hall" like sound in your performance make sure that your multi-effects device features the reverb effect.

A long delay in your sound is known as echo. Although it is a natural effect, it is only exclusive to large open spaces like a hall, for example.

When you shout out loud in a gigantic hall you hear your voice bouncing back. It is fun to play around with Echo, but guitarists use it to render back the sound that they have just played.

One can set the period between the playbacks, level and the rate of notes until they become quieter and dissapear altogether.

Do you need a separate echo in your performance or will you use the delay for producing the echo?

Have you ever noticed the need of playing a music phrase again and again? If that is the case, then you might look for a looper function in your multi-effects pedal.

What is looping?

Looping functionality allows users to record a specific phrase or part to play it back repeatedly whenever they want. One can record more loops and lay them over the previous one but it depends upon your multi-effects device.

This feature allows users to repeatedly play a recorded loop like a base music and add topping over it in real time (click here to see our full review on Looper Pedals). Setting up a one-man band wasn’t that easy in past!

Looping function allows beginners to set up their own musical ideas without needing anyone else.

While buying your multi-effect device be sure to check that it features a looping function along with a reasonable recording time.

After going thoroughly through this article one can easily pick the coolest pedal as per their needs.

What is a multi-effects pedal?

Multi means more than one so a multi-effects pedal has more than one effect, all built into a single pedal. You can think of a multi-effects pedal like multiple pedals stored in a single device – a hybrid, if you will.

A multi-effects pedal is a cost-effective device that includes many effects of various pedals in a one stop shop solution. Just connect your guitar and you have a variety of effects to try including both vintage and new.

On the whole, a multi-fx device give you a taste of many effects in one pedal.

Now moving on to the second part of the question, a multi-FX pedal provides the same functionality like a traditional stompbox. Just connect your guitar and try the various effects available for a winning combination.

Are multi-fx devices upgradeable?

Nope! A multi-fx pedal includes many digital effects on one single board with pre amps and other functionality, you can just connect a guitar and use the features that are available.

Basically, a multi-fx device is comprised of hardware that comes pre-installed with a variety of effects. One can only use it without then modifying the effects installed in it. If you get the right pedal, you won't want to modify it!

Are multi effects pedal reliable?

Out of reviewing customer feedback, we've noticed that only a few reported negatively. These seem to be very rare in the top products we've chosen. If you do your research, you should end up with a perfectly reliable multi effects pedal.

Note that only invest in a multi-effects pedal that is highly recommended by current customers because as the saying goes: customer is always right”!

  • doggedly flying: 8:50
  • BluesLicks101: I'm a pro and the reason you claim people use a routing pedal (i.e.GigRig – I prefer to call them "routing pedal" rather than looper, as a looper repeats phrases) is not why I do: my gear is true bypass and there is no noticable degradation in the signal chain as I have a low gain overdrive and compressort constantly on, which drives the line, the reason I use a routing pedal is not mentioned in this video… TO AVOID THE "PEDAL DANCE" i.e.: When you are running more than a few pedals and you need to make sometimes drastic simultaneous changes to multiple pedals at once in a live situation there is simply no other way.
  • Seamus McMichael: Excellent video, and by the way your Guitar sounds nothing short of amazing.
  • hot dog broth: How much would you say your pedal board is worth?
  • Robocopenpillama: Cuanto por los zapatos de Aladino?
  • Swaggy Yankee: I think this gave me a boner
  • Mary Webb: What riff did u play for the wah pedal. sounds cool
  • John Riley: Volume pedals are a great addition to anybody’s arsenal, but be warned about the Ernie ball volume pedal, they probably have one of the best swells, but that comes at a price, inside the unit is a piece of cord/string and without warning it breaks, Ernie ball are fully aware of this defect in the design as they sell spares for your convenience or inconvenience.
  • Dr Dizzy Saivate: Great review !

I have a Digitech Screamin blues and Boss Super Chorus. Planning to add a wah2 pedal in the future.

  • John Rodzinka: wast of money
  • John Rodzinka: a lot of wasted money if you know how to play you don,t need most of that stuff
  • The THC Assassin: terrible !
  • sbjkd: You don’t know how to use a Tube Screamer correctly. It is for use with a naturally overdriven amp. Get the output tubes working hard, then use the TS and it will scream. Otherwise it sounds like a weak OD which boosts the mids-very uninspiring. It has another, amazing, use if you stack your drives. Run the TS first, leave it on with gain turned all the way down. Turn on your second gain pedal and see what happens. By the way, learn the correct use of “myriad”.
  • Wayne Ridenhour: AWESOME information & even adjusted my thinking about pedals some
  • GenX Havoc: What's the piece in 16:15 called ?
  • violeman: Good tips bud!!
    +1 sub!!
    Rock On
  • Dennis: Sage: A word about your presentation. It was unclear to me what boxes are on vs. what is off at any given time. Also, playing with-then-without the effect would be nice.
  • Brett Marlar: The Boss MS-3 does the job of nearly every pedal on your board, including the gig rig for only $400. It has 3 loops to either add your favorite pedals, and/or control your amp via the 4 cable method. I have 3 pedals before it as those are always at the front of my chain. In my loops, I have my favorite OD pedal, my Mooer amplifier profile pedal, and a DD-3 for added psychedelic textures. All of my other effects, modulations, compression, delays, reverbs, harmonies, etc. are all in the MS-3. Begins with my Morely optical volume, then my Boss PS-5 Super Shifter, then my Morely Maverick Mini Wah. After the MS-3 I have the T.C. Electronic Ditto going into a Mooer Mini DI with speaker simulation to run direct. Since I've got the XVive wireless system, I only have 2 cables coming from my board, Power and XLR to the board. Although, I can also run a 1/4" to a power amp in on an amplifier should the venue have insufficient monitoring.
  • Richard castillo: what are you using to power the board?
  • Chuno Rock: thanks for this nice video men! love how you built your rig and it sounds awesome.
  • Hawkuist Gaz: E.H pog+ loop WASP !AAAARHHELP AAH BIGFF….UKI NSTIN G..
  • Leon momy: wow i didn't expect james hetfield in a video like this . Wait you don't sound like him .
    Sorry my bad
  • Caleb Rice: Beginner pedalboard maker here — What is a preamp and do I need one?
  • BMJ: first thing I did when I got my EB VP JR I sent it to JHS to get it modded. Highly recommend doing that to help against noise/tone loss. Also adds a cool LED lol
  • BlueTitan7: I have a lot of pedals…like a lot. However I recently plugged in straight and saw what I've been missing! I don't wanna bore you, my point is that everything starts taking something off the signal: be that the definition of the note, too much depth, too easy to play (very important how certain pedals cover your playability), etc. I nowadays prefer jack to the amp, maybe a silver screw DS-1 before my Marshall. The rest for me, I repeat: FOR ME sounds gimmicky. You have to be very good to play straight to the amp too. Thanks ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Daniel Gravel: You have a G2 so why not clean up the pedalboard cables? The pedals are buried in blue cable. What a mess. I'm not a hater… I have two pedalboards and the wires are streamline to help reduce hum & just plain organization. It doesn't take much. You've already made the investment. Just a thought.
  • Austin Josef: I love the video but which pedal should I get first?? Been playing for a year now with a squier mustang HH. Any suggestions would be taken into consideration
  • AristophanesNow: “You don’t need a delay. Unless you need a delay.”
  • Sam Plautz: There's a reason I only have a boss distortion pedal. I can't afford 50 to 100 dollars a pedal. However I use bias fx. Sure it may not be the exact sound of these pedals but for 20 dollars it is amazing and so practical.
  • Prodigious Planet: There's a new site selling guitars and gear. The site is so new there's no data or reviews. Anyway you can review their stuff? Seems too cheap. Are these knockoffs or just great deals? http://msucy.com/ Music Shop
  • Renaissance Man: why do you call it a wah wah pedal instead of just a wah pedal?
  • Matt Hodkin: Thanks you so much Ben Affleck
  • Levent: Thank you so much for sharing your experience with that stuff. That helps me understand the hardware a lot.
  • Mr. Memester: Ok I'm new to electric guitar and going to purchase one soon. Are there any other absolutely-need-to-have things besides the guitar, amp, and the pedal, like, is there a separate purchase you need to make to connect the pedal to the amp or what?
  • dicky devtoky: I use line6 M5 in my pedalboard… Tinny but crazy… ?????โ˜โ˜ I like this… ??
  • Anthony: Wah, Fuzz, two ODs for me.
  • lynyrddeville: There are many ways to get your personal tone, and many brands, and the only thing in common between his rig and mine is the vintage re-issue late 50s style Les Paul and the HOF reverb, but ultimately, his classic rock tone (AC/DC in particular) is absolutely spot on. Quite excellent, and very cranked Marshall-esque, so give the man his fair due.And the only pedal on his board that is not super common is the Empress delay.
  • Herb Maloid: ?
  • Nick Makrias: Thank you for making this video! Ive been playing Acoustic mostly and now that i'm moving into electrics, Ive been feeling stupid when it comes to pedals. Thank you so much and keep up the good work ๐Ÿ™‚
  • jakup martin Hjelm: Great playing.. when you peapole do this videos, i find it to much talking, i would rather the pedals did the talking..
Thanks anyway for a great video.
  • Sophie Key: What is the amp you are using?
  • Stan Esposito: Funny that you have that much noise when you kicked in the way right after mentioning the reasons to use a looper.
  • Joe 16: What type of Pedal Board do you have?
  • Thousand Knives: I bought an ART multi effects rack mount back in the 80's, but what? you can't use reverb and/or delay at the same time???? WHAT?!!!
  • Zombie23Maniac: When you're too poor for a fuck ton of pedals.
  • Paul Willis: Jeez, wtf happened to you? You look so … "wool-eee". It has nothing to do with your guitar teaching, we know that. BTW, it took you years to accumulate and, who knows how many $$$ or .lbs (just kidding-no pound symbol on my keyboard, I know you're a yank— just kidding.

Out of curiosity, how much do they all cost, total. Maybe that's too personal, that's ok, sorry. Your observations are interesting and your demonstrations sound sooo cool on that beautiful LP, mmmm; that's just my envy talking, or/and jealousy. When my mom let's me spend my milk money, which I have been doing since I was 6, and I can buy one, I'll come back. Thanks though, very interesting, really. Good luck.

  • StratFinders: You're kind of an idiot. You got the dumb Tube Screamer.
  • Maximus Trout: BIRD UP!
  • Rzizorbird: Lord Baelish plays guitar? That's cool=)
  • Tobeah Catalyst: would be great if you could write the pedals in the video info blurb? Otherwise really great video thanks a lot man! really helpful and informative.
  • Clay Chandler: This guy is boaring
  • Mark Edwards: It's amazing how many pedals (and patch cables) get sold so that a player can make that Marshall sound. And then there's always that omnipresent thought, if you want to sound like a Marshall, then, get a Marshall. Here we are, 50 years later, and the whole guitar market is still simply obsessed with it.
  • Samuel Greene: Great video! I use a lot of the pedals shown. There are some others that guitar players should know about. Check out this page for great pedal reviews.. http://guitareffectspedalz.com/
  • Stacey Dash TV: where did u get the guitar w the switch and whats the name of it is it still available on line.
  • Stacey Dash TV: this is a very good video for beginners thanx for upload

  • Sphinx951: That wah sucks lol
  • sergio silva: I've only been apreensive about the tube screamer thanx a lot. For this vid. Congrats from Portugal
  • Robert Ironside: What's the looper maker's name again?
  • VonBluesman: It is amazing how each pedal sounds different with a different guitar and a different amp. Tone quest goes on forever.
  • Keith Coleman: Very helpful. I am on board
  • Marlon J: And what if I have a Marshall JVM410h? There I don't necessary need overdrive/distortion pedals, do I? ??
  • madelefant05: 8 pedals too many.
  • Damon Rothermel: very good video.good explanation.. thing I dont understand is how all this lines up with a solid state amp. my understanding is od pedals dont do well with a solid state amps.
  • Jesse: If you organized you cables, you might not get so much buzz..
  • Al Picard: Great session, thanks for the tips and mostly about sharing your knowledge.
  • Forallofus Plenty: KINGSLEY, dude…
  • Hoshi Studios: Boss metalzone is the only pedal you'll ever need ?
  • mick21: Too many effects pollute the sound , no need for everything here !!!!!!!!!!!!
  • David Morisset: I place the volume pedal right before the time based pedals so I keep the trails on the delay and reverb as I drop the volume. Great for ambient sounds.
  • Angelo Delacruz: he looks loke james hetfield lolol
  • trevor warren: I can hear that buzz, dude needs a noise gate.
  • Ramone Bills: What about the 'all in one' pedals? Is there any particular multi-effect pedal that can replace these ones?
  • Kranick: Please open subtitles for this video. I’m not a native English speaker so it’s very useful to see text on the screen with this video. Thank you in advance!
  • Cade Eastwood: I recieved an electric guitar years ago as a gift and haven’t had any idea where to begin. Your channel and website = Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! I now have a starting point and much more!
  • Dror Boudoukh: You can't demonstrate all the pedals with drive…
  • Keaton Tait: nice
  • RLMUD: im walking out, during your spot light solo.
  • JazzelleDrums: What pedal board are you using to place them all?
  • Ian Z: Is that a blues junior 3 your using?
  • HH Bestfriends: Nice setup ! What OCD version do you have there? =)
  • Giuseppe Verzi: Hi, where you put volume pedal in this chain??? into G2 or in one other pedal??? sorry for my bad english… ?
  • pied a' terre: although personally i like a little less flame (like new 58 Ri versions or real 59 models), that is a beautiful guitar
  • Gary Thalmann: Well done
  • fendercuber: Would the OCD be good for heavy distortion?
  • Purple Haze: Eric I apologize for what I'm going to say and don't take it badly but you do not play well enough to teach guitar unless you're hiding some wicked guitar playing I've never seen on your channel…unless you're teaching beginners from scratch that know nothing to about 3 chords.
  • Tom Monfron: Should have named your channel the Erich Andreas Show….just sayin
  • Tanner Gariepy: why is the mic recording the amp dangling from its XLR cable, your gonna ruin the cable and jack of yor mmic aswell as probably drop that mic any day now if it just sits like that
he mic is to heavy to do that
